WARMERDAM SCORES FIRST CAREER SPRINT CAR VICTORY AT KELLER AUTO SPEEDWAY
(Hanford, CA) 2-23-2020- The Van De Pol Western Racesavers kicked off their 2020 season this past Saturday night at the newly-remodeled and reconfigured, Peter Murphy Racing led Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford. A series record opening night 23 cars checked in to the 3/8ths mile clay oval.
BR Motorsports qualifying would see 20 of the 23 checked in drivers take two laps in group qualifying. #99 Rob Solomon would take home $50 and fast time honors with a lap of 14.440. #38 Kyle Rasmussen clocked in 14.461 and defending series champion #18 Grant Champlin 14.585 on a very hooked up surface.
Three heat races would await the huge crowd gathered for Hanford opening night. CS9 Chassis Heat #1 winner went to #11 Blaine Fagundes. #53 Michael Pombo took home Spy Graphix and BRB Fabrication heat #2. #9s Rick Bray rounded out the heat race action by picking up the 3rd heat race win courtesy of Danell Custom Harvesting. All heat race winners were awarded $50 cash.
After an invert of zero, the field of 21 cars would be led to the feature green by Solomon and Rasmussen. The first yellow would fly on just lap 1 when the #5 of Chris Stevens would go over the berm in turn 3. After the restart, Solomon made quick work and began the lapping process on lap 5, with Rasmussen trying to track down the leader. The dreaded orange cone would bring out the next race stoppage on lap 13 with #75 Brendan Warmerdam passing 2nd running Rasmussen a lap earlier. Warmerdam would take the lead on lap 16 with a inside move on Solomon coming out of turn 4. A few laps later Rasmussen would also pass Solomon to take over over the 2nd position. As the laps wound down, #38 Albert Pombo, #2 Brooklyn Holland, Champlin, #19 Colby Thornhill #22 Mike Schott, M. Pombo and #5D Connor Danell all battlling for top 5 positions. Hard running Rasmussen would bring out the event’s only red on lap 23 with a soft tip-over in turn 4, the driver was ok, however, it would end his night. Heartbreak under yellow-flag conditions for Holland as a flat right rear tire forced her to give up her top 5 running position for a trip to the hot pit. A two lap shootout would see Warmerdam lead the field back to green and A.Pombo drop form 3rd to 8th, with the track starting to widen out a bit. At the checkers Warmerdam would pick up the popular win with Solomon, Champlin, Thornhill and Schott rounding out the top 5.
